Walking along a trail one could easily pass by this scene and not give it a second look. It blends with its surroundings and becomes part of the accepted landscape. A somewhat curious feature that might make you pause a moment or two, perhaps look on as the dog inspects a bush along the path. But I am filled with questions. The pathway, a retired train track repurposed for walking and biking through nature, sits well above the marshy grass. One must climb down over an armour rock bank to experience the fence up close, being careful to not step in a soft, deep puddle. Why are the remnants of a fence here in a marshy area right beside the sea? Before trains ran along the trail on their steel rails firmly laid down and tied in upon a bed of crushed rock, what was here? Was it a farmer’s field where cows grazed, or horses trotted in a gentle sea breeze? Perhaps on a foggy day such as this, would the horses enjoy the damp air laced with salt? Was it always this wet, or has a high tide been pushed by the wind to create something resembling a tidal pool? How long has this fence endured the conditions it now lingers in and how much longer will it last? The trains have come and gone and there are no horses to save from wandering off, but evidence of the fence that once worked here remains. I captured it at this moment on a foggy day, a thin sliver of time. And still I am filled with questions.
