On a day when I set out to explore a rocky beach at the end of Dyke Road in Grand Desert, N.S. I passed by a barn on Marine Drive in Seaforth. Beside the barn, a fishing boat, propped up on a stand, grasses growing all around stood idle. Awaiting the next lobster season I guessed. I needed to stop and look more closely. As fate would have it, someone saw me pull over and that someone also stopped. He pulled in behind me as I was at the edge of the road, preparing to go closer for a look and he rolled down his window. Through a thick, grey beard, a strong weathered hand stroking his chin, he asked; “do you like the boat”? Yes, I said. Is it yours? It was. So, with camera in hand, I asked would he mind me taking a few pictures. We chatted a bit and I learned he not only owned the boat but also an eye-catching home along the Dyke Road, where I had just been. It was a pleasant and amazingly well-timed encounter. I gave him my business card, and he graciously left me to my pursuit of images. But I struggled for a composition. The light not quite right, the angles I found not producing the image in my mind. Positioning myself behind the barn for a different perspective I discovered this old, discarded sewing machine. “Now that”, I said to myself, “has a story to tell”! Of a day long since past, when children played in clothes made at home by loving hands. Of work pants patched and seams repaired to face the elements another time. Before things were bought cheap and discarded quick this sewing machine, which in spite of the weathered markings I imagined to be a Singer, had done its duty well. And I was glad to have discovered it there and to hear its story.
