In a little area known as Fisherman’s Reserve lies a quaint collection of fishing shacks tucked into a point that stretches out toward Wedge Island, NS. It is a little place where fishing boats sail from to set lobster traps in season, and where one feels as though you are on a precarious little spit of land that could be easily swallowed by the sea. Everything here shows you how the elements work to erode and weather away any surface exposed. You can smell and feel the sea in the air carried by the breezes that encourage you to breathe deeply. A vibrant orange lichen adheres to many things here. For some reason it finds the conditions pleasant to grow and thrive in. Painted surfaces do not long retain the bright colours often used to cover them, and they reveal themselves as textured memories, perhaps awaiting another coat, or left to weather. It was this sense of standing bravely to the elements, partly protected by a ridge of armour rocks, with their lichen covered roofs and faded red sides that drew me in, and each time I view this image I feel uplifted somehow. It speaks to me as quintessential seaside truth.
"Weathered" is offered as a limited edition of 10 prints and is formatted to 12 x 18. I feel the light vibrance of this image will be best enjoyed on a lustre paper, however the softness of smooth matte would work nicely as well.
